Nik "Darwin" Rakestraw and Chris Carter Set Out Across Kyrgyzstan on a pair of Unit X's

Chris Carter of Switchback Travel and filmmaker Nik “Darwin” Rakestraw have set off on an 850-mile bikepacking journey across Kyrgyzstan and into Tajikistan aboard a pair of Kona Unit Xs. Their route follows the Tian Shen Traverse along the Silk Road, eventually leading them into the Bartang Valley.

The first week has been nothing short of staggering. Vast valleys, wild horses, layers of peaks, and the warmth of local culture have decorated their ride so far. It’s been equal parts humbling and euphoric, with big climbs, brief but blissful descents, and plenty of time in the “pain cave.”

They recently reached their first resupply in the town of Naryn before pushing west toward the Bartang Valley. The ride is also part of a film project they’ve been working toward, aiming to capture the raw, rugged beauty of these remote landscapes.

For now, enjoy some early snaps from the road, and stay tuned for more updates from this epic adventure.
